I recently saw one of my favorite singers on TV and she had what looked like sparkly glitter on her teeth. Could I get porcelain veneers with those? It looked awesome!

Dear Tricia,
The things celebrities come up with! Are you sure they were porcelain veneers and not just some temporary grill? There are lots of celebrities with grills and removable tooth jewelry these days. I recently saw one man on a talk show who had diamonds on his teeth.
I’m sure you could find a cosmetic dentist who’d be willing to provide you with porcelain veneers decorated with a glittery substance, but be certain that’s something you want. Porcelain veneers are permanent. While it might be fun to hit the town with that type of tooth decoration, it’s not something that will serve you well on a daily basis. It could even limit your employability. Most places of business want their employees to look professional.
Cosmetic dentists receive all types of requests. Usually, around this time of year, our biggest requests are for vampire teeth. We also received a lot of those requests during the Twilight craze. However, most dentists aren’t comfortable giving patient permanent vampire teeth because of the potential of harm it can do to others. Instead, we’ll provide them with something temporary that will be removed after their special event.
Of course, what you’re asking for won’t harm others so you should have success finding someone to do it. Just be certain that’s what you want 24/7 before doing anything you regret.
Also, make sure the cosmetic dentist you use has adequate training in porcelain veneers and aesthetics. These aren’t things taught in general dental school so the dentist has to make an effort to learn them doing post-doctoral studies. For instance, Dr. Becker trained at the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in dental aesthetics.
If you go to someone who hasn’t had similar training, you’ll end up with a sub-par smile.
