I have an impacted wisdom tooth that is infected. I think the infection is from the tooth next to it that had a root canal treatment a couple of years ago. Because of that, I want both teeth removed, but my dentist is only willing to remove the wisdom tooth. I have refused because I think he should do both teeth. I’ve also been having ear pain, which convinces me I am right. Can you give me some pointers in how to get him to do the work I want?
Alison J.
Dear Alison,
I want you to bear in mind that if your dentist extracts two teeth, instead of just one, he gets more money. With that in mind, why do you think he is only wanting to remove the infected and impacted wisdom tooth? The only thing I can think of is that the adjacent tooth is not infected and he has enough integrity to not just take your money when he knows what you are asking is a bad idea.
When you take out a wisdom tooth, there is no need to replace it. However, if you also remove the adjacent tooth, then it will become necessary to place a false tooth there. the best and most secure tooth replacement is a dental implant. That would mean even more money for your dentist and surgery for you. Knowing the best thing for you is natural tooth structure, your dentist is saying lets not take out a tooth unnecessarily.
One of the concerns you had is that ear pain you are having. To put your mind at ease, this is more likely from the impacted wisdom tooth than anything else. I would not mess around and leave an infected wisdom tooth in your mouth. This will spread. Your wisdom teeth are very close to your brain, throat, and heart. This is one of the reasons that tooth infections are considered dental emergencies. If you don’t get it treated, then a simple tooth infection can turn life-threatening.
