I want to find out how to get beautiful porcelain veneers. I’ve seen several people with then that have one thing or another wrong with their smile. What are some reasons these things happen? Is there a way to avoid them?
Macey
Dear Macey,
The key is the dentist. You want a dentist who has the knowledge and skills to give you a beautiful smile. Before we get into how to find that dentist, I’ll list the top three biggest problems with a poorly done smile makeover using porcelain veneers.
Horse Teeth
One of the most common problems inexperienced cosmetic dentists face is creating bulky smiles. This most often happens when they use Lumineers. This is a brand which is highly marketed to inexperienced cosmetic dentists. They are promoted as being easy to place because they don’t require any tooth preparation.
Unfortunately, that often results in teeth that look bulky and unnatural. I’ve often heard them described as horse teeth. This can happen with other brands too, but the factor in both is the same. The dentist doesn’t have the experience necessary to do this right.
Rough Spots
When your procedure is done, the porcelain veneers should be completely smooth. If you notice any rough spots or if your floss catches anywhere you’ve got a problem. This is not just a nuisance. This will end up causing decay because bacteria will get caught and trapped there.
Quickly Stains
Porcelain veneers are very stain resistant. However, sometimes when there is a mistake, the porcelain veneers end up picking up stains. One type of staining can happen as a result of the hygienist accidentally taking off the protective glaze during your checkups and cleaning. This can happen if they use a power prophy jet or acidulated fluoride. When that happens, your teeth will quickly begin picking up stains.
A second thing which can happen is if the dentist doesn’t get the bonding quite right. This allows things to get trapped in between the veneers and your teeth.
Finding the Right Cosmetic Dentist for Your Porcelain Veneers
I want you to take three different steps.
- Examine their Smile Gallery: Any cosmetic dentist who wants to be taken seriously will have a smile gallery. I want you to look at the work that they’ve done and make sure you LOVE the results. I don’t mean think they’re okay. I want you to think they’re stunning.
- Check their Reviews: You want to be certain that people have had experiences with this dentist have had good experiences.
- Have them Agree to Not Bond them on Until You’re Completely Satisfied with Them: They should allow you to try them on with a temporary try-in paste. This allows you to see what they’ll look like before they’re permanently bonded.
