Hi, I’m hoping you can help me. I had sensitive and exposed parts of my teeth near the gumline. My dentist suggested we put some dental bonding there. I was willing to try just about anything. While it did take care of the sensitivity, I have two problems. One is a vanity issue, but the other is functional. First, the vanity. The fillings do not match my teeth at all, and people keep telling me they think I have something stuck in my tooth. Is there any way to get these to match? Second, one of them popped out today? Is this going to be a recurring problem?
Allie
Dear Allie,
I’m sorry this is happening to you. What you’re likely dealing with at your gumline are known as abfraction lesions, as pictured here. We used to think that this happened because people brushed their teeth too aggressively, however modern research has shown that it is caused by the clenching of teeth repeatedly. This is a habit many people have without even realizing it because it often happens at night while they are sleeping.
Clenching causes your teeth to flex right at the gumline. This will weaken your teeth in that area, which leads to the wearing away of the teeth. This is also likely why you had one pop out. If you have flexing of the teeth, then you will need a flexible filling. It sounds like your dentist used a stiffer filling.
You asked if this will be a regular problem, and the answer is yes, UNLESS your dentist replaces the dental bonding with something more flexible.
This should not be beyond his capabilities, but neither should have making sure the composite material matches your teeth and polishing it up to a nice shine. Because they are popping out, it gives you an excuse to ask for a refund if you want to go to someone else. They can remove the composite material which remains and replace it with materials that match and will not pop out.
