I’ve had my porcelain veneers for about two months now and I’ve probably been back seven times to have one or more of them bonded back on. For some reason, they keep popping off. My dentist doesn’t charge me for putting them back on, but I’m frustrated. I can’t keep dropping everything when one of them falls off. Am I doing something to cause this or is it something else which is wrong?

Dear Leigh,
There are two possibilities going on here. The first is that you grind your teeth without realizing it. This can wreak havoc not just on porcelain veneers, but natural teeth. It wears them down and causes them to chip and break.
If there’s no sign that you’re a tooth grinder, then the problem is your dentist doesn’t understand the bonding technique necessary to do this procedure properly. Either way, with the number of times your veneers have fallen off, it should have been raising red flags with your dentist. The fact that it hasn’t, makes me have serious doubts about the competence of your dentist.
Porcelain Veneers Require Expertise
I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere with your dentist. I’m going to suggest you do an internet search for another cosmetic dentist in your area. Check their smile gallery, their training in cosmetic dentistry, and their reviews to make sure they’re actually qualified and not just dabbling the way your current dentist appears to be.
If you’re happy with your current smile makeover (with the exception that it keeps falling off) then you just need someone to bond them all on for you correctly. However, if you’re disappointed in them at all, this is your chance to get a full refund and have them done by someone else.
Cosmetic dentistry is an art form. Just like in other artistic endeavors, some artists are better than others.
