I need a procedure where the dentist thinks I’ll need dental sedation. The problem is he insists I have someone drive me to and from my appointment, as well as stay with me during and after the appointment. Usually, I just hire an Uber to get to my appointments. I don’t own a car. I’m new in town and don’t know anyone yet, nor do I have any family around who can help. I don’t think I can get an Uber to stay, but was thinking about hiring someone from Craigslist. Have you had patients do this before?
Diana
Dear Diana,
Moving is always an adventure, isn’t it? You get to make new friends, reorganize a home. Both of those things can be fun and stressful. However, that doesn’t help you with your current problem.
I couldn’t tell you if we’ve had patients use Craigslist. We always make sure they have care but don’t grill them on their relationship with the patient. However, I’m going to suggest we look at other solutions for you due to the nature of dental sedation.
Why You Need a Caregiver with Dental Sedation
Sedation dentistry, especially oral conscious sedation, which is likely what your dentist plans to use, is very strong. You will be so completely relaxed, not only can’t you drive, you’ll be less likely to care what’s going on.
Though you can understand what is going on around you and can communicate, you will not be steady on your feet, nor will you be completely lucid.
The question to ask yourself is, do you really want a stranger taking care of you at such a vulnerable time? You will be trusting not just your home, belongings, etc, but you’ll also be entrusting your body to them. They’ll be helping you to the bathroom, getting you food and water, as well as changing your bandages.
Alternatives to Craigslist
If you have medical insurance, you may see if they’ll provide a one day caregiver for you. This has the benefit of your caregiver having medical training when it comes to things like changing the dressing in your mouth.
If your insurance doesn’t cover anything like this, there’s another alternative. If you are a member of a faith group, you can call a local congregation and ask the bishop, priest, or rabbi if they have a trustworthy member who’d be willing to help you.
You wouldn’t have to be a member. Most faith groups would be more than happy to help people in your type of situation. While not every member of a faith group is trustworthy, you’d be having the liturgical leader pick the person and they’d be in a position to know their character.
